London, England (AHN) -- The British government on Wednesday released extensive reports of purported alien activity, the first time government files on UFOs have been made public. The records contain images of aircraft flying over Liverpool and a UFO hovering over Waterloo Bridge in London, the British media reported. In the files, air traffic controllers and police officers report seeing mysterious craft and hundreds of sightings of unexplained objects in the skies over Britain. Following a request from UFO researchers, the Ministry of Defence released eight files in the National Archives under the Freedom of Information Act, covering the period from 1978 to 1987. Sightings include tales of little green men visiting an area near Wales. However, most records that were released are said to be misinterpretations of various kinds. Nick Pope, responsible for investigating the sightings, told The London Telegraph that, "Most of the UFO sightings here are probably misidentifications of aircraft lights and meteors, but some are more difficult to explain." One of the reports details three experienced air traffic controllers who attempted to "talk in" a UFO that landed on the runway before them on April 19, 1984, at an East Anglian airfield. The airfield was operating two runways called 22 and 27, when one of the officers noticed lights approaching the other runway. According to the report, the speeding object, described as a "brilliant solid ball of light, bright silvery in colour" barely touched runway 27 then departed at terrific speed in a near vertical climb. Other files include a report of a 1985 incident by a Sea King helicopter crew who tracked two objects on their radar for 40 miles, travelling at almost one nautical mile per second. The National Archive in Kew, southwest London, hopes to make available more than 150 files over the next four years.
