Islamabad, Pakistan (AHN) -- In a bid to spread family planning awareness, the Muslim clerics in Pakistan have decided to distribute contraceptives in the mosques. This comes as shocking news from a conservative country where mere discussion of sex is considered a taboo. The Muslim dominated country's birth rate was 1.86 percent and the country wants to bring it down to 1.3 percent by 2020. According to Daily Times, the mosques would distribute contraceptives of different kinds, medicines and literature and has hired around 22,000 clerics, including 6,000 women scholars, to raise awareness about family planning. The country is reportedly following the footsteps of Bangladesh, where clerics inform the people about the significance of family planning in their sermons. In Bangladesh packets of contraceptives were placed in mosques and the ministry was also planning to start the program at the time of Isha prayer. Pakistan aims to achieve population control. Targets set for 2020 could be achieved in 2010.
