Chicago, IL (WFN) -- Brown bagging it to work or school might save you money but you could be paying with a massive stomach ache if you're not careful. According to a new survey by the American Dietetic Association and ConAgra Foods, many Americans who pack their own lunches are also packing lots of possibilities for foodborne illness. The worst offenders: Sandwiches with meat and cheese; dips and salsas and yogurt products, which are perishable, especially when temperatures soar to 90 degrees. Kids are especially sensitive to the stomach-churning lunches, but experts say they can be prevented by freezing a juice box and using it as an icepack. Also, you can avoid the dreaded "brown bag barf" altogether by eating shelf-stable foods for lunch, such as granola bars, popcorn, single-serve apple sauce and non-refrigerated pudding cups. Some lunchtime-related vomit may be unavoidable because 27 percent of Americans don't bother to wash their hands before packing lunch.
